THE JC VS POLY DEBATEok, i admit i am a little slow in catching up with this topic, because I totally forgot to check up razor tv whenever i come online.Well, if i don't remember wrongly, Mr Lee said that there is no "level playing field" for JC students, and therefore, the former should be given priority in getting a place in the local univeristies. In my opinion, I guess Singapore is still a meritocratic society, so basically each and every able student should be given the means to upgrade and better him/herselves. But I have to agree the thing about level playing field is glaringly obvious. In a span of two years, we are made to cram 3 H2 subjects and 4 H1 subjects in total on top of our CCAs and school events, whereas for the poly people, they are able to take their time in learning what they like. Many even have the time to work part-time while studying. So imagine how much time they have, except of course for the occasional periods close to the examinations.Another point I would like to raise is that, JC people are not just book smart =.= i guess that's jsut a consolation for people who could not make it to the generally perceived so-called higher strata. I experienced the same treatment during Freshman Orientation Day where some counsellor too spoke to my cohort in the most reputable private university, that we are much more street-wise than the local university students which I think is just bull shit. So I got to make this point clear, poly people, we have life in JC. We have extremely crazy and fun orientation camps and activities. Yes, we do mug not because we love to mug but we just HAVE to do it. So we are not nerds and geeks, who love books and only books. On the issue that poly people are better with practical because they have attachments and stuff, I agree that poly people are much better at the "hands-on" aspect. However, does being more hands-on equate to doing better in universities? It depends really. For engineering courses, yup, obviously an engineer needs to work with machines or chemicals if you are biochemistry engineer, so you are of an edge over the JC people in that respect. But for humanities and social sciences, I guess in JC, there are General Paper and Knowledge Inquiry and those subjects alone open up our minds since we do do research on general issues and societal development. So I guess, merely guessing, JC students will do better in that field.JC or Poly doesn't matter. What's important is we are all Singaporeans, and we should stand together and protest against those foreigners who are taking up our places in the local universities. Although only 20 percent of the university place are allocated to foreigners, their extremely competitive nature and the fact that many modules which they are taking were in fact, mastered before in their home country shows that, us Singaporeans, JC or Poly alike are at the losing end, since the bell curve will be shifted against the weaker students.I really cannot imagine the society Generation Z is going to live in."Not summer's bloom lies ahead of us, but rather a polar night of icy darkness and hardness." - Weber. :(
